SDSU Herbarium processes over 1200 specimens for Flora of the San Gabriel Mountains
Dick Swinney is a botanist working on the Flora of the San Gabriel mountains. He is a prolific collector, having collected over 25,000 specimens. However, many of his specimens have been housed in boxes at his personal residence.
Thanks to a grant from the California Institute for Biodiversity, the SDSU Herbarium was able to acquire two new cabinets to house over 1200 of Swinney's specimens. These specimens have been databased, labeled, barcoded, and photographed. They are now available as vouchers on the CCH2.org, the portal used for California herbaria collections.
We are grateful to the Institute for this grant. The collection data and images of these Swinney specimens are now accessible to scientists and the public in general, allowing these collections to serve as vouchers in documenting this Flora. |
